Modern Labor Laws

The end of the Vietnam War heralded an era of more conservative government. People were suspicious of the military adventurism that had caused America to involve itself in wars in Southeast Asia for nearly twenty years. There was also social pushback against the civil rights gains made by minorities and white women since the end of World War II. The Republican Party gained more power in the federal government, culminating in the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980.

President Reagan led a government that was extremely hostile to unions and friendly to businesses that were still angry about the New Deal reforms that had helped workers. In the first year of his presidency, Reagan effectively broke the back of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization. After 15,000 air traffic controllers walked off the job on August 3, 1981, to protest lack of staffing and modernization that was placing too much strain on people in an already stressful job, Reagan said on national television that any air traffic controllers who did not return to work within two days would be fired.
